At the beginning of first century d.C. the emperor Octavia Augustus relized a reformation of the sicilian territory; he authorized the renovation and construction of some cities, this to organize and maximize the collection of wheat, olive oil and taxes. In this period was founded a big city, probably called Gela to remember the ancient city with the same name destructed by Finzia, tyrant of Agrigento, in 282 b.C. and never reconstructed.

The new town became, for its fertile land and its intermediate position between two big cities like Catania and Agrigento, one of the most important hubs of agricultural products toward sea ports, where the goods were shipped to Rome or where necessary. This town, As noted in other cities of the Augustus time, had a perfectly rectangular shape.

This town reached its peak in the first two centuries of the roman empire. In this time was built a thermal plant, which today remains a tub for water harvesting, externally to the second thermal plant constructed in the second period of life of this site. As a result of the role change of Sicily in the roman economic life - all supply sources were move to Egypt - the town, like many other sicilian ones, had a gradual depopulation and loose its importance and its role.
