Aidone and Morgantina

The Aidone Archaeological Museum, realized in the 17th century Cappuccini monastery and inaugurated just over 20 years ago, is the ideal connection between the small town and the most remote past of this territory. When the lombard peasants settled here, they absolutely did't know that they were not the first to choose this area of Sicily as their residence.

They thought that all the sones spreaded along the country, few miles east of Aydon, belonged to the ancient town called Herbita, and not to Morgantina. Only in 1955 some archaeologists from Princeton university identyfied Morgantina, bringing to light what had remained after the destruction ordered by Octavian in 36 b.C.

The importance of Morgantina is linked to the fact that its discovery has made possible for archaeologists to get a deeper knowledge - by the direct observation of all precious manufacts and architectural structures - of the relations between the native communities of Siciliy and the greeks, that started on 6th century b.C. the colonization of the inland areas of the island.
