The town arise on a mount at 721 meters MSL, in the center-south part of Sicily, upon the first western part of the Erei mountains. The traveller that reaches it after having crossed the bare and almost desolate lands of the inner Sicily, the district of Piazza Armerina appears like an happy oasis, luxuriant of vegetation, with its mounts thick of eucalyptus, pines, oaks, firs; its hills dotted with olives, almonds, figs, vineyards; in its valleys shady of hazel, poplars, orchards; all starred with rural houses, luxurious ancient villas and modern cottages.

The town has all the characteristics of a lively an evolved one, rich of public and private gardens, illustrious churches, aristocratic palaces, artistic monuments, modern shops, recreation centers, pubs  and restaurants.

Its ancient part, divided into four historical districts "Monte", "Castellina", "Canali" and "Casalotto", is characterized by the typical gray-pink color of the local sandstone used in most of its buildings, by a late-medieval urban layout, a mainly seventeenth construction plant, with its winding and sometimes steep streets, with the impressive size of the Cathedral that dominates all sides, with its bell-towers that rises from every part.
